New Bern, North Carolina - 2016
Educational Purpose: I made this short trip to New Bern, NC in order to research my great-great-great-grandfather Charles H. Webber's involvement in the Civil War from 1861-1864. Webber, a Yankee soldier in the Massachusetts 23rd regiment, was stationed in New Bern and served as a drummer (he was sixteen when mustered in) and also saw several battles, including
Roanoke Island, New Bern, Goldsboro, Kinston, Whitehall, Carolina City, and Fort Macon. I am grateful to my host, Richard Parsons, whose historical and cultural knowledge were instrumental to understanding the neighborhoods, battle sites, and the context of New Bern during its occupation by the U.S. army.
The below photographs are from the signs at New Bern Battlefield Park explaining the battle's history.
